Friday The 13th Interesting Facts

"Thirteen at a table is unlucky only when the hostess has only twelve chops." - Groucho Marx.

Are you a superstitious of Friday the 13th? This year in 2012 we will have three Friday the 13ths. One happening in April and one happening in July. Did you know there is only three Friday the 13th per year max?

Interesting stuff I found online about the theory of Friday the 13th.  Take it with a grain of salt.
 (Thrown over your shoulder!)

There is a theory behind Friday the 13th which is the Last Supper. It is the number of people who were present at the Last Supper which would be Jesus and his 12 apostles. Judas, who was the apostle who betrayed Jesus, was the 13th member of the party to arrive. Another theory is that Adam and Eve ate from the forbidden fruit on a Friday as well as the great flood began on a Friday.

Did you know that 17 to 21 million people in the U.S. have a diagnosable phobia of Friday the 13th. This illness Is called friggatriskaidekaphobia. source

Another reason is the number is right after the number 12 which numerologists consider to be a complete number. With that said there are 12 months in a calendar year, the 12 signs of the zodiac, 12 inches complete a foot, 12 gods of Olympus, 12 hours on the clock.

Unlucky number 13..
There were 13 stairs leading to the gallows, It is told that the blade in a guillotine fell from a height of 13 feet and a hangman has 13 knots in a hangman's noose.

We have heard that buildings leave off the 13th floor. According to the Otis Elevator Company.  Did you know planes sometimes leave out the 13th row and some hotels do not have a room number 13.

Italians demonstrate their dislike for the number 13 by doing away with number 13 in their lottery.

It is estimated through many sources over the Internet that the US economy loses approx 900 million dollars every time there is a Friday the 13th, why? Because people tend not to make big money making deals on this day. Many do not go into work all together.

What about you, do you have a Friday the 13th phobia?

  1. I didnt know there was so much history behind this day.

But really it's a diagnosable phobia?! It's not like the day can be avoided. That's just really strange to me.

  6. Funny, the history of things like this. Like the history behind "knocking on wood" going back to passerby's attempts to touch the cross of Jesus.
